Portraits of our heroes

On March 3, 2026, five dedicated members of the Upemba National Park team went missing while on duty. These men and one woman devoted their lives to protecting one of Africa's oldest national parks. The ICCN pays them solemn tribute and reaffirms its commitment to continuing their conservation mission.

SUBIRA KAKUSI Bonhomme

Bonhomme was a pillar of the park’s strategic management. Responsible for planning and monitoring conservation activities, he ensured that every operation was carried out rigorously and efficiently. His commitment to the preservation of Upemba National Park was unwavering.

An accountant

KAMBALE BWAKYANAKAAZI Blaise

Blaise managed the park’s finances with exemplary integrity. His meticulous work ensured transparent accounting and the proper allocation of resources needed for conservation operations in the field.

Biomonitoring Assistant

AWUYI OSUDO Ruth

Ruth actively contributed to the scientific monitoring of the park’s biodiversity. Passionate about fauna and flora, she collected and analyzed essential data to guide the protection strategies for endangered species in Upemba.

Human Resources Assistant

NGOY MATETA Jean-Paul

Jean-Paul was the administrative heart of the team. As an HR assistant, he ensured the well-being of the staff and the smooth coordination of the teams. A dedicated veteran, his experience and leadership inspired respect from all his colleagues.

ZIHINDULA Samuel

Samuel traversed the park’s difficult trails to maintain communication between patrol posts and headquarters. His courage and knowledge of the terrain made him an indispensable link in the daily surveillance operations.
